I chose Hartwick because it felt like a community where I could grow and flourish. I was touring colleges during the pandemic. Everyone at Hartwick worked with me to figure out how I could still tour, and even figured out how I could meet with the music professors. Hartwick felt like a place I could call home and find where I belong while still learning, exploring, and meeting new people. I have found that all to be true. Plus, the views on campus cannot be beat!
As a music major, part of my thesis is to perform an hour concert with my primary instrument, the harp. It is a culmination of everything I have learned while within my program, from conquering most of my stage fright to the stamina I have built to play for over an hour straight. I am looking forward to sharing my love of music and communicating the language and stories within the pieces I am playing. I will be performing several harp solos and end my recital with a vocal and harp piece, where my father (who has sung in a few opera ensembles) will be singing in Welsh as I accompany him. I look forward to showing what I have learned and sharing that with the people I have met along my journey at Hartwick.
When choosing classes, I try to find a way to connect them to what I am interested in. Several have allowed me to explore potential career opportunities, like Literary Editing and Intro to Grant Writing. Others have allowed me to learn more about my majors, like Music Theory and American Literature. I also take classes outside of my major because I have strong interests in the topic, like the American West. I have learned a lot about myself through taking courses I did not expect to enjoy as much as I did, like Town and Country and Intermediate Poetry Workshop. Each of the classes I have taken during my time here have taught me something, from expanding what I am passionate about (Classical Myths and Four Fantasists) to renewing a passion (Literary Editing and Music Theory), to learning a brand new passion (Intermediate Poetry Workshop and Irish Music and Culture).
