Instructor

Dan Buttermann has served as Hartwick College’s clarinet studio instructor since 2021. Buttermann graduated from the University of Arizona School of Music in 2006 with a Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance, and was a 2006 winner of the young artist competition for the Catalina Chamber Orchestra. Buttermann has also performed jointly with pianists Blas Gonzalez, Ya-Ting Liou and flutist Ana Laura Gonzalez at the National Conservatory of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Since moving to Oneonta, Buttermann has performed with the Hartwick College Faculty Wind Quintet, the Catskill Symphony Orchestra, the Catskill Choral Society, the Catskill Valley Wind Ensemble, and the Oneonta Community Concert Band. Buttermann is probably most often seen in performance as a duo with Dr. Ana Laura Gonzalez.

In 2018, Buttermann joined Dr. Gonzalez at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Festival to perform as part of her presentation about nationalistic performance practices in Luis Gianneo’s divertimento for flute, clarinet and bassoon.

Buttermann’s principal teachers include jazz saxophonist Heath Krieger, Associate Principal Clarinet of the Phoenix Symphony Steve Hanusofski, and former clarinet professor and 40-year member of the Dorian Wind Quintet, Jerry Kirkbride. Additionally, Buttermann attended the Le Domaine Forget de Charlevoix Music Festival in Saint-Irenee, Canada, and studied with Charles Neidich.
