Yager Museum to Feature Talk by Haudenosaunee Lacrosse Coach, Historian

The Yager Museum of Art & Culture at Hartwick College will host a talk by Neal Powless entitled “‘We Will Know Each Other As Brothers” The Lacrosse Journey of a Haudenosaunee Coach in the Netherlands.” The talk will be held on Wednesday, April 10, from 6-7 p.m. in the Anderson Theater in the Anderson Center for the Arts at Hartwick College. The event is free and open to the public.

Powless is the head coach of the Dutch National Lacrosse team and an internationally ranked lacrosse player. He is also a member of the Onondaga Nation and has a deep knowledge of the long history of lacrosse, which the Haudenosaunee refer to as “The Creator’s Game.”

“We are delighted to host Neal Powless and get an insider’s view of the past, present and future of lacrosse,” said Museum Curator Quentin Lewis. “Neal is incredibly thoughtful about the complicated and overlapping worlds of lacrosse, indigenous recognition and colonialism. I’m really grateful that he will be sharing his insight with the Hartwick and greater Oneonta communities.”

Due to the level of interest in the event, the talk will take place in the Anderson Theater. The Yager Museum galleries will not be open during the event, but visitors can explore the museum’s current exhibits during regular hours. Highlights include “A Deep Dive into a Large Ocean: Tourism, Tradition and Transformation in Micronesian Culture”; “‘No Child’s Play: The Impressionist Paintings of Anna Richards Brewster”; “Velocity and Position: The Human Figure in Motion and at Rest”; “Sculptures in Silver: America’s Standing Liberty Quarters, 1916-1931”; and “Masterpieces of European and American Art: the Hartwick College Art Treasure Room.”

The talk is made possible through generous support from the Richard and Gerri Haan Fund for Native American Studies at Hartwick College.

The museum’s regular hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. when the College is in session. It is closed on Sundays, Mondays, College holidays, and when the College is not in session. Admission is free.

More information is available on the museum’s Facebook page and webpage or by calling 607-431-4480 or emailing Lewis at [email protected].
