The View From Here

It feels like just yesterday I stepped onto Hartwick’s beautiful campus as president.

Though my tenure may be new, the warmth of the Hartwick community has enveloped my wife, Mari, and me from the very beginning. For this, I am incredibly grateful.

Hartwick is a very special place. Its magic, however, isn’t found in the ivy-covered buildings or the picturesque setting and beautiful view (though those are certainly nice perks). It is, without a doubt, each of you, and the profound impact you have on the College.

You are, quite simply, the beating heart of this College. Through changing times and unforeseen challenges, the faculty and staff have consistently delivered the highest standard of teaching and learning. Their dedication to nurturing young minds is inspiring. Our students — their passion for knowledge and thirst to make a positive impact on the world — leave me in awe every single day. And our alumni — who embody the spirit of Hartwick and exemplify the transformative power of education — make me so proud.

Looking ahead, I want to share the key initiatives that will shape our journey together. Continued academic excellence and innovation, along with enrollment, philanthropy and financial sustainability, are fundamental to a vibrant future for Hartwick. However, I want to emphasize that these aren’t simply my priorities; they are the cornerstones of a shared vision. Each member of the Hartwick community will play a vital role in bringing this vision to life. We need the collective energy and spirit of everyone here to propel us forward as one.

This issue of The Wick perfectly complements this theme of a united community driving transformative change. It delves into the profound impact Hartwick leaves on its members, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and values to become effective changemakers. And this issue resonates deeply with the College’s recently launched, $50 million, Together, We Soar fundraising campaign.

As you read through these pages, you’ll encounter stories that showcase the tangible ways in which Hartwick graduates and members of our broader community are leaving their mark on the world. Their paths may vary — research, community service, activism, entrepreneurship or simply living a life guided by the College’s core values — but the common thread is their unwavering commitment to making a difference.

It’s a legacy we write every day. Not just as alumni, faculty, and staff, or students and families, but as one united force, propelled by a shared vision and a commitment to shaping a future filled with purpose, passion and positive change. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey at an historic moment for Hartwick.
