Professor’s Kind Words Inspire Alumna To Share Musical Gifts

When Jane Oddo '75 was getting ready for a recital in 1990, she received a note from Thurston Dox, her former Hartwick music professor.

“I hope something special can come up and you could come back to Hartwick,” Dox wrote. “You’re achieving so much with your music.”

Decades later, Oddo, a retired librarian and symphony flutist, fulfilled her mentor’s wish, sponsoring Hartwick’s Flute Day.

The event featured a masterclass with music assistant professor/artist in residence Ana Gonzalez and guest artist Alison Brown Sincoff, a professor at Ohio University. It also included a warm-up workshop and a public recital featuring Sincoff and the Hartwick flute ensemble, Flute Salad.

“Back in 2019, I got to meet Jane when she visited the Music Department. We had a nice talk about flute and Hartwick when she was a student, which strengthened my idea that there was a legacy of flutists at Hartwick that the College needed to foster.”

Assistant Professor of Music/Artist in Residence

That legacy was on full display at Flute Day, where students of all experience levels got the opportunity to play alongside professionals and participate in their first masterclass experience.

“It’s a momentous occasion. Getting to learn from and then perform in a recital alongside such an incredible guest artist is an honor, and one you might not expect at a small school like Hartwick.”

Long, who started playing flute in fifth grade, admitted she didn’t always appreciate it. “But Dr. Gonzalez showed me the versatility of the instrument and the flute has had a special place in my heart ever since,” she said.

Oddo didn’t just sponsor the event—she also brought along her flute, stepping onto the Anderson stage to relive her days as a performer.

“I wanted to do something to support music at Hartwick. Flute Day is special for the students, but can also be used as a recruitment tool.”

Both Gonzalez and Oddo hope that Flute Day will become an annual event.

“Events like this are so special to me as a flutist and as an educator,” said Gonzalez. “I get to see the tiny seed that sparks into a real idea and I see it grow all the way until it blossoms into a concert.”
