Honors Seminar Inspires Alumni To Share Their Expertise

For Travis Cos '02, being an alumni mentor is all about giving back to Hartwick.

“I’m indebted to Hartwick,” he said. “It was the catalyst for a lot of things I became and valued.”

Now a primary care psychologist at the Corporal Michael J Crescenz VA Medical Center in Philadelphia, Cos is sharing what he knows with students in Economics Professor Kristin Jones’ Honors Seminar – and changing the course of Madison Corso’s life.

“When Professor Jones paired me with Travis as my alumni mentor, I didn’t expect anything crazy,” said Corso ’23, now studying clinical psychology at Drexel University. “But he answered all of my emails within three hours of me sending them!”

“I’m so happy that my class was able to connect Madison and Travis,” said Jones.

“The guidance and advice that Travis has provided have been invaluable. I'm so grateful that we have alumni like him who are willing to give their time to help amazing students like Madison move towards their professional goals.”

As a first-generation student, Corso worried about applying to graduate schools. “I kept asking myself, what am I doing?” she said. “Psychology programs are so competitive; they’re so niche and I had no idea what program I wanted to go into.”

But Cos, who also teaches at Drexel, was more than happy to help Corso with her CV, personal statement and letters – and to recommend she apply to Drexel’s master of science in psychology program.

She applied and got in, focusing her research on food addiction.

“Travis checks in on me. And we’re going to start talking about how to look for Ph.D. programs in clinical psychology next.”

“It’s so rewarding for me as a faculty member to work with students who are willing to really take advantage of opportunities like this,” said Jones.

And Madison is already sharing Cos’ generosity with the next classes at Hartwick. “I’m already reaching out to students,” she said. “An alumni was willing to help me and I want to pay it forward.”
