Hawks Learn What It’s Really Like Out There
This spring, Hartwick students are afforded an extraordinary pre-professional experience through the inaugural Hawk
Students and their classmates meet Hartwick alumni and early career professionals in three different cities. The program is designed to inspire and empower Hartwick students to learn about career options after college and make meaningful connections for their future.
Funded by support from Rob Carpenter ’88 and Baltimore Washington Financial Advisors, a cohort of 43 students went to the Washington, D.C. area for two days of meetings and mixers last month.
Rob and several alumni shared their experiences about the transition from student intern to professional employee, landing a competitive internship or job, and life on the job after graduation.
On April 26, approximately 30 students will travel to Albany and meet with host NYS Assemblymember Jen Lunsford ’04 and up to 10 other alumni. A Virtual Boston HOP featuring Hartwick Board Chair and Chairman / CEO of Liberty Mutual Insurance David Long ’83, H’14 was postponed due to bad weather and power outages in the region. “This is an amazing opportunity for our students,” said Director of Career Development Peter Bennett. “This is a high-impact program that develops skills and relationships that students won’t get in the classroom.”
Bennett noted there were multiple levels of networking happening at the March event: student-alumni, student-student, and alumni-alumni. “What you learn as they all interact is amazing,” he said. “And there is nothing like going on a immersive experience to really take relationships to a higher level.”
HOP has already netted its first success story. Cierra Barkley ’23 secured a summer internship with Rob Carpenter’s firm after meeting him in Washington.
