Starting at the end of J Term, Hartwick students will be able to get their Emergency Medical Technicians-Basic (EMT-B) certification on campus – for free.
The course, which starts Jan. 23, will be taught by members of the Otsego County Office of Emergency Services. Students will meet on campus Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as some Saturdays throughout the spring semester, where they’ll be able to practice hands-on skills, including taking vitals, immobilizing spinal cord injuries and broken bones, and assisting in administering medications.
“It’s the lowest level, but it’s the most needed EMT job out there,” said Demarais. “And it opens a gateway for so many opportunities – nursing assistant, medical assistant, paramedics. Even some sheriff’s departments are asking their deputies to be EMT-B certified.”
The course will be overseen by James D. Buthman, associate professor of political science.
The course also prepares students to sit for the New York State EMT exam and get their EMT-B certification. “Our instructors have a 100 percent pass rate,” said Demarais. “They’ll even help students register to take the exam.”
Demarais hopes the class will continue after he graduates this spring. “I’d love to see this blossom into a larger paramedic program,” he said. “Maybe Hartwick could even have its own emergency management service squad.”
