Hartwick Institute of Public Service Raises Close to $100K in First Fundraising Drive

The Hartwick Institute of Public Service has achieved a significant fundraising goal, raising $97,500 during its first year. This remarkable feat was made possible thanks to the generous contributions of 50 individual donors who, along with two institutional community partners, met the challenge match set by Hartwick College Trustee Raymond “Larry” Miller ’73. Miller has pledged to match every dollar the institute raises up to $50,000 each year for five years.

“I see my gift as an investment in the College and the institute. It not only honors my late wife, Judith Day, who was an advocate for public service, but also leaves a lasting legacy of a stronger democracy and a more resilient country.”

The non-partisan Hartwick Institute of Public Service is run by three faculty co-directors, Professors Matt Chick, Laurel Elder and Zachary McKenney, who will use these funds to carry out the mission of the institute, which is to engage young people in democracy and inspire the next generation of public servants.

The institute is now embarking on year two of its fundraising campaign. Gifts, which are part of the Together, We Soar campaign, will be used to continue offering public service internships, voter registration and education programming, as well as opportunities for students to meet and work with local, county, and state government officials to strengthen the community and region.

“We are grateful to the individual donors and our institutional community partners,” said Laurel Elder, co-director and professor of political science. “We are lucky to have such dedicated supporters who have invested in the institute and its inaugural Leadership Council, which includes ten highly accomplished Hartwick graduates with expertise in public service who advise the institute on its programming and fundraising.”
