From ‘The Commons’ to the Extraordinary: Reflections on Leading, Connecting and Giving

Garfield Drummond ’99 knows the lessons learned outside of the classroom are just as important as those learned inside it.

“My close friends and I would hold court in The Commons, the library…anywhere we could engage with people and learn about their lives,” he said.

“The social atmosphere at Hartwick was a huge influence on who I am and the career I’ve made.”

These early interactions helped shape his ability to connect with others — skills that would prove invaluable in his journey to becoming the owner and general manager of FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center in the greater Boston area.

An economics and political science major, Garfield served on the judicial board and Student Senate and played varsity football, gaining leadership and collaboration skills that later propelled him into high-profile roles.

“I needed to be involved in as many different ways as I could be. And because I had all these different experiences, it really empowered me to become a mini expert in a variety of fields.”

These skills translated seamlessly into his professional life, where Garfield held prominent positions such as a managing partner at Phoenix Global Health, director of strategic initiatives for Metropolis Capital Partners, and president/CEO of National Records Centers, Inc. (NRC).

“Hartwick really taught me how to get comfortable in any environment, with any kind of person and then make that environment work for me,” he said.
