First-Year Student Spotlight:

Cosmo Hardinson ’28

Being a first-year student can be life-changing…perhaps even a little nerve-racking. Welcoming these student-athletes to their new home away from home, Brianna Liebro ’25 has discovered some insights into these new Hawks’ lives and their experiences at Hartwick.

As Cosmo Hardinson entered his first semester at Hartwick, he knew this was where he wanted to be—driven by his love for basketball and the competitive spirit of collegiate sports. “I’ve loved basketball my whole life and have always been a competitor, so collegiate sports was a no-brainer for me,” he said.

And his advice to students in high school who share his love for basketball and sports? Just do it!

“If you get there and realize it isn’t for you, you have complete freedom to change,” said Hardinson. “But you are always better off trying. There is no harm in trying something you want to do. There will be no what-ifs!”

Key to Hardinson’s experience has been managing his time effectively.

“My time management skills are fairly good,” he said. “Having a lot of things to attend to makes it easier to stay on task. Sometimes being busy is exactly what people need to succeed.”

Hardinson’s goal for his first season is to contribute to the team, improve his game and show the skills he worked on in high school. Hardinson also sees his college experience as crucial to his future career. “I hope that by the end of college, I will have matured enough for the real world!” he said.

Hardinson attributes his success in life so far to his coaches and family.

“My family are my biggest fans. They are just as committed to the ride as I am. Especially my little brother. He loves to watch my games!”

As Hardinson points out, having a strong support system is critical when pursuing an athletic career at the college level, especially as a first-year. “When times are rough, knowing you have strong and loving supporters makes the times just a little easier,” he said.“Coaches also help with development throughout the journey.”

For Hardinson, that includes the support coaches offer during practice and through study halls, which, according to Hardinson, helps student-athletes set time aside to focus on their goals, particularly academics.
