Clubs/Interests: VITA income tax program; Kappa Sigma Fraternity; SUNY Oneonta Rugby Club; Hartwick College ESports Team, Hartwick College’s Podcast “Wick Cast.”
Favorite thing about Hartwick: The relationships you make. The opportunities you have at Hartwick are endless and you never know what you will fall into, but there are so many people around you who will help you succeed no matter what. I came to Hartwick not knowing a single person and I am about to graduate with hundreds of new friends and people I can go to when I am in trouble. The relationships you are able to have with your professors are something that can’t be described in words because they are personal and special.
Advice for the upcoming class: Don’t come to Hartwick with a fixed mindset because you will regret it. Be open to the opportunities that present themselves. You have no idea where you will end up by the time you graduate. I came to this College with one major in mind and the mindset that I would never join a fraternity and look where that has taken me. I am confident in saying that because of these experiences that I took advantage of, I am better prepared for life after college.

Lastly, all the brothers of Kappa Sigma: thank you for your advice and the lasting memories that will be with me forever. Love all you, boys!
Advice for the incoming class: Take advantage of the small class sizes because it is easier to learn and easy to ask professor questions. Also, don’t be afraid to show your face at office hours. Just do it. It does matter. It shows your character and your responsibility. Lastly, enjoy your time here and build a lot of connections and friendships. And take advantage of all the opportunities you have.

Samantha Gauthier

Went on 3 J Terms – Italy in 2023, Japan in 2024 and Italy in 2025.
Clubs/ interests: Radio Club member and Psych Club member and I love live music! Going to concerts, musicals, DJ sets. I’ll watch any live music.
Sporting interests: I haven’t played sports since high school. I used to be into competitive travel soccer, but did not try out for the Hartwick team. I still love to go to soccer matches.
Favorite place/person at Hartwick: John Christopher’s Cafe is my favorite place at Hartwick! Not only do they have good coffee, but it is also a great study place. I can sit and gab with friends, have a meet and greet with classmates or study: a truly versatile space.
Advice for the incoming class: Even though you might have specific career goals, it is important to try new things. Take a class just because it’s interesting or join a club…..just because! I found out so much about myself through trial and error. I came in with just psychology, but tried religion, science, math, music, and culture classes. This inspired me to add another major and two minors! All of the J Terms I went on had nothing to do with my career goals, just my personal ones. I was able to explore fashion in Italy twice and culture in Japan. Neither of those had anything to do with psych or public health, but they allowed me to explore diverse cultures and my personal interests. It’s okay to switch your major and it’s okay to add or drop a few minors. Hartwick may be small, but it has a lot to offer.
Where are you headed? I plan to move to Boston after Hartwick and pursue a master’s in public health. Regardless of where that takes me, I want to make sure that I am making an impact. Public health is important and it’s especially important now!

Advice for the incoming class: My advice to the incoming class would be to take every opportunity you are handed and run with it. Don’t say no. You will never get these four years of your life back. You are only in college for 4 years and need to make the most of it.

Stella Giustino
Hometown: Monroe Township, New Jersey
Major: Business Administration and Digital Marketing and Accounting (CPA)
Achievements: Faculty Scholar in Digital Marketing; Philip S. Wilder Jr. Award for Academic Distinction (2022-25); Outstanding Service to College and Community as a VITA member (2024); Hartwick College Dean’s List every semester from spring 2022 to fall 2024; Empire8 President’s List, every semester from spring 2022 to fall 2024; Empire 8 Hartwick Women’s Soccer Sportswoman of the Year (2024).
Clubs/interests: Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC); Chi Alpha Sigma Athletic Honors Society; Sigma Beta Delta International Business Honors Society; and 3-year member of the VITA program.
Sporting interest: Women’s soccer.
Favorite Hartwick memory: My favorite memories have been made during my soccer pre-seasons at Hartwick. Those two weeks in August, where it is only the fall athletes, have allowed me to build some of my strong friendships. Instead of stressing over a course load, pre-season allowed us to grow close to our teammates and build strong chemistry on and off the field. It is also the perfect time to really focus on your sport and have the opportunity to practice multiple times a day. It was just so much soccer and I love every second of it, even the fitness tests!
Favorite thing/person/place at Hartwick: The VITA program has allowed me to learn and grow through each year of my involvement. I started as a basic tax preparer and used the knowledge and experience gained during these past years to blossom into a leadership role as one of the site assistant coordinators. I appreciate having the opportunity to be a real leader to others and being able to guide them through tax returns and provide assistance. It is a very rewarding feeling when you can help others and pass along your knowledge. The VITA program feels like a close-knit community where everyone feels comfortable working together and helping one another succeed.
Advice for the incoming class: Look to get involved early. College goes by extremely fast and it is important to immerse yourself in your classes, activities/clubs, sporting interests, internships and on-campus events. Don’t be afraid to take on a lot. Sometimes, the workload and your responsibilities can feel overwhelming, but as long as your priorities are in order and you manage your time, you can accomplish everything you desire!
Where are you headed? I am hoping to pursue a career in the marketing field. I am also considering studying for the CPA exam and becoming an accountant.

Favorite Hartwick Memory: Becoming a brother of Tau Kappa Epsilon has to be my favorite memory. Everyone in the chapter was unique, had their own interests and abilities and used them to help develop their peers. That environment, surrounded by people who only wanted to see me succeed and were willing to give me whatever it took, was the best feeling in the world.
Favorite thing/person/place at Hartwick: My favorite person at Hartwick College is Dr. Ross Bussell, head of the education department. Dr. Bussell sets his classroom up for everyone to succeed and provides in-depth, individual feedback to each person. Never have I been in a classroom where a teacher wrote personalized notes and suggested songs that he felt a student should hear. Dr. Bussell is by far the most caring teacher/professor I have ever had. Dr. Bussell also happens to be my fraternity’s faculty advisor, assisting all members with their grades and providing advice. Dr. Bussell is much of the reason I am at Hartwick and an amazing person outside the classroom.
Advice for the incoming class: Become involved in extracurriculars, organizations and sports whenever you can. As someone who has been highly involved in the Hartwick community, I can confidently say that although sometimes it’s a lot of extra work, it’s well worth being a part of something larger than yourself. This can also be very rewarding; it’s great to put on a resume and great to develop leadership skills. Not to mention, seeing your hard work come to success is an awesome feeling.
Where are you headed? Work for Tau Kappa Epsilon International Fraternity, assisting active chapters and helping develop the leadership abilities of young men throughout the US/Canada.

Advice for the incoming class: College is such an important time in your life and four years fly by extremely fast. Be present and in the moment; you’ll have time to stress and worry, but don’t let yourself fall into a slump. Every moment is priceless, so take advantage of the amazing opportunities at Hartwick!
