Depperman Awarded Prestigious Golisano Fellowship in Developmental Disability Nursing

Hartwick College Clinical Assistant Professor of Nursing Lisa Depperman has been named a 2025–26 Golisano Fellow in Developmental Lisa Depperman Disability Nursing, joining an elite international group of nursing professionals working to advance health equity for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

The Golisano Fellowship is a year-long virtual program organized by the Golisano Institute for Developmental Disability Nursing. Its newest class includes fellows from across the United States and Ireland, selected for their leadership in nursing practice, policy, education and advocacy.

While accompanying Hartwick pediatric nursing students during their clinical orientation, Depperman first learned about the opportunity from Jessica Weston, director of nursing at Springbrook, a regional leader in services for people with developmental disabilities.

“She told me the program was offered through St. John Fisher University, so I looked into it and decided to apply,” said Depperman. “This is a great opportunity for me because working with people, especially children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, has become my passion. I am looking forward to taking what I’ve learned into the Springbrook clinicals to further my knowledge and impart it to the junior nursing students. Learning from experts will further my understanding and ability to make an impact.”

Depperman’s work through the fellowship will culminate in a year-long project: the development of a community-wide emergency simulation involving individuals with IDD. The simulation will engage local agencies, services and Hartwick students in a collaborative, real-world learning environment.

Depperman also teaches “Don’t Say the “R” Word,” a FlightPath course focused on disability awareness. Her interdisciplinary approach highlights her commitment to changing perceptions and expanding understanding across all fields of study.

“This is about building bridges—in education, community engagement and care. The fellowship will give me the tools to strengthen those connections.”
