What I do now: Senior software engineer at AAA Northeast. The job consists of writing a lot of code for the organization, a combination of both low code and pro code approaches. We try to limit the amount of code we write so that people are empowered to make the changes themselves.
I also work a lot with Microsoft space, cloud computing, writing algorithms, and programs to give members the best possible experience as well as the people who work for the club. I am also involved in a rising leaders group, where I am being taught and groomed to become a leader for AAA, where I can inspire people and make changes within the organization.
Skills Needed for this Field:
- A logical mindset.
- A drive and desire to learn – a life-long student.
- A love for problem-solving.
- A self-teacher since the field is always changing/evolving.
- Confidence in presenting your ideas to others.
- A sense of humility to take ownership of your mistakes and learn from them.
Challenges in this Field: Technology is a big challenge in itself as it is always growing. There are also things coming down from leaders like different instructions or requirements, which keeps the job interesting, but can be very stressful to learn how to adjust on the fly. The change in leadership requires you to adapt to new bosses and their different processes/strategies.
Hartwick Experience that Impacted My Professional Life: Hartwick was a great opportunity to get involved in so many different opportunities and activities, like Greek life, leadership roles, traveling abroad, etc.
I was active in various clubs across campus and took an interest in research and volunteering experiences. Hartwick helped me find what I wanted to do by being diverse and exposed to new social environments with lots of communication. It was important to find a balance between a heavy workload and having a social life.
