Alumni Spotlight:
Matt Morrish ’18
What I Do Now: As a financial services senior consultant, I work with businesses to define and pursue their broad strategic goals. I also co-founded the startup Albi with Harry Morton ’18, which aims to reduce food waste on college campuses.
How the Hartwick Experience Impacted My Professional Life: I discovered how much I like getting in the “ring” and looking for opportunities. I played soccer. I was a Baker-Simpson fellow. And when I was named a John Christopher Hartwick (JCH) scholar, it felt like a huge recognition for all the hard work I’d put in over my first three years at Hartwick. Balancing academics, athletics and a social life is an incredible challenge, but receiving the JCH gave me the confidence to go out and shoot for the stars.
Challenges in the Field: When you first join a company, people may be skeptical when they see how young you are. Your goal is to learn, develop what you know and earn their respect. You get through that by being uncomfortable and having to work a bit harder, but remember – your whole point of being in a room with a client is to advise them and help them to see that your points are in their best interest.
My Favorite Aspect of My Career: My favorite part is being able to help people with the big questions. I like thinking big, being optimistic, thinking about what is coming and how we can get there. Being able to work on those projects is a challenge, but it’s a very positive one.
My Advice for Current Students: Be proactive and make the most of the opportunities that Hartwick provides. No one can take that first step for you. It’s your career; the rest of your life, what do you want to do with it? Be motivated. Take that first step.
