National Security Internship Prepares Senior for Life as a Diplomat

If you ask Tyler Osterhout '24 what he did during his internship at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, he couldn’t tell you.

“I had a security clearance,” said the global studies major. “All I can really say is that I worked in the U.S. mission as an operations intern.”

Osterhout, the son of two career diplomats, was drawn to Hartwick because of the lacrosse team. He played for three seasons before resigning due to injury.

However, interactions with faculty and alumni were what really made his Hartwick experience so special.

“I got to meet Jason Moses '83, who worked as an analyst and senior executive in the Army. We had so many conversations on what it was like to work in defense in D.C.”

With an eye toward becoming a diplomat like his parents, Osterhout focused his studies on the political science realm of global studies, including courses on global justice, foreign affairs and international relations.

“Diplomats are some of the most important employees of the government,” he said. “They’re able to work on and create relationships with diplomats from around the world, then maintain those relationships that we need for our interests.”

Following commencement, Osterhout will pursue a master’s degree in international affairs at SUNY Albany’s Rockefeller School of Public Policy.

“Diplomacy is essential, especially right now,” he said. And it’s going to be increasingly important over the next decade. You never know what will happen.”
