Career Networking Program Making Sure the Future is Now

From first-years to seniors, “Ask the NetWick” is making a difference. An informational interview initiative that falls under the umbrella of the NetWICK, the program matches a student on TrueBlue Connect with an alum based on career/industry interest or affinity.

For Jacob Keyes ’24, a double major in history and environment, sustainability and society with a minor in peace and conflict studies, it meant a match with Michael Doherty ’73, who graduated from Hartwick with a degree in biology and then went on to earn two master’s degrees and have a successful 46-year career in strategic military and civilian service.

History and Environment, Sustainability and Society Double Major; Peace and Conflict Studies Minor

The new program also gets students thinking about their future as soon as they arrive on campus. First-year student Taylor Stalker ’26, enrolled in Hartwick’s three-year bachelor’s degree program, was connected with Emilee Patterson ’19, who is currently pursuing graduate studies in biological studies at Vanderbilt University.

“It is super helpful to have this connection right now. Patterson gave me invaluable advice for the career path that I am pursuing and said I can reach out whenever. She also encouraged me to make the most of my time at Hartwick and go on a J Term trip.”

Biology Major

Jess Flatley ’24, a public health major with a minor in educational studies, had the opportunity to talk to Seth Lucas ’10, vice president of child development for the YMCAs of Boston. 

“Before we spoke, I thought I was going to be a preschool teacher,” said Flatley. “Seth was able to share a lot of great insight on other professions and pathways to explore. It is just one of the many opportunities offered that makes career development special at Hartwick College.

The inaugural “Ask the NetWICK” program got off to a great start during J Term, engaging close to eighty participants, including 40 students and 40 alumni volunteers.
