Federal Work-Study

At Hartwick, we know that hard work is one of the surest ways to success. Work-study opportunities are valuable career prep.

Financial Need-Based Program

Federal Work-Study is a need-based program that encourages students to work on campus to help pay their college expenses. Jobs may vary from office work during weekday hours to staffing The Yager Museum, Foreman Gallery, Campbell Fitness Center, and other specialized areas on evenings and weekends. A $2,000 Work-Study award converts to about five hours per week. Work hours may depend on your class schedule.

You can find all of our on-campus jobs listed on Handshake.

Students receive bi-weekly paychecks and the rate of pay is usually minimum wage. Approximately $600 of the Work-Study award should be targeted toward payment of the student’s bill. Work-Study earnings are also intended to cover miscellaneous expenses, such as books and supplies for classes. Work-Study earnings should be used to cover these expenses as well. Students may arrange with the Office of Student Accounts to have a portion of their earnings applied to their bill.

Before you are permitted to begin a Work-Study job, the Student Payroll Office requires the completion of certain forms. To learn more about these forms and the payroll process, visit the Payroll webpage.

Federal Work-Study Guidelines

Students interested in a Work-Study award must apply each year by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The resulting federal need analysis determines eligibility for Work-Study. Please remember that the FAFSA cannot be completed prior to October 1st. Hartwick College requires its completion by May 1 for the upcoming award year.

If you receive a Work-Study award as part of your award offer letter from the Financial Aid Office, the award is the maximum amount that may be earned during the specified award period. Awards are subject to revision (increase or decrease) due to changes in a student’s situation and/or availability of funds.

Job listings may be viewed on Handshake through our Hartwick College – On Campus Employment, employer page. The student is responsible for contacting the employer directly. As part of the hire/rehire process, each student must request authorization on Handshake through the Experiences button, on our Career Center. Once submitted, Handshake will send an email stating when you are authorized to begin working.
