Prospective Students Flock to Hartwick for Accepted Student Day

Ayden Rosscup, Little Falls, NY, is ready to be a Hawk.

“This is my third visit to campus,” he said. “The football coaches called me, the track coaches called me, and those personalized interactions meant a lot.”

Rosscup, a criminal justice major, was one of over 200 students who, with their families, came to Hartwick for Accepted Student Day.

At Taste of Wick, the line for Stuff-a-Critter ran all the way to the door. Bucket hats went fast, and guests posed for portraits at the selfie station.

“We got so much swag, we had to get two bags!” said Hailey Karampatsos, who came with older sister Autumn, a nursing major who also deposited that day.

“No other college we saw offered clinicals in the first year. Hartwick really puts their focus on nursing, and I really liked that.”

Students then broke into groups based on their majors. The Life Sciences group went to Johnstone, where they got to look at blood cells, ferment juice with baker’s yeast, and see a can crushed with electricity. In Anderson, guests interested in the Arts and Humanities could try their hand at playing the theremin, creating a blackout poem, or brush calligraphy, then take home a silk-screened t-shirt.

Nurses got to tour the Simulation Labs and watch a video demonstration of a full code simulation, where Hartwick nursing students rushed to save a “patient” who went into cardiac arrest.

“This is the best nursing program I’ve seen,” said Gwenyth Cox, who, along with her friend, Dakota Caifa-Martinez, made enrollment deposits during their visit. “And as soon as I arrived on campus, I felt like I belonged here.”

And each student and their family got to meet President Darren Reisberg and ask questions.

“There is a place here for everyone. We each bring our authentic selves to Hartwick, and we know you will too.”

Families got to enjoy lunch in The Commons, where Devin White, director of dining services, gave them the Hartwick weekend experience, complete with pizza, waffles, salad and sandwich bars. And student-athletes got their own reception that afternoon, getting a chance to meet with future teammates and coaches.

“There are so many friendly people here,” said Cora-Mae Bolster. “I’ve committed to Hartwick College.”
