Pine Lake

At Hartwick, we know there's much to be learned from our natural surroundings.

Our Pine Lake Environmental Campus offers a natural classroom of woodlands, wetlands, and a lake with student residences that include a lodge, cabins and student- built straw bale and cob houses, located just eight miles from the main campus.

Since its purchase by the College in 1971, the Hartwick’s Pine Lake Environmental Campus has played an integral role in the College’s commitment to environmental and sustainability studies and awareness. The campus offers students an opportunity to reside in a living-learning community where learning is collaborative, interdisciplinary, sustainably-based, and community-centered.

Hartwick’s Pine Lake Institute for Environmental and Sustainability Studies includes research and programs that engage the entire College. Much of the work of the Institute’s faculty is conducted at the Pine Lake Environmental Campus. This includes studies on water quality, the impacts of invasive species, and biological diversity.
